Roof shingles installation is a complex task, and you should only do it if you are experienced enough and know what you are doing. If you have never done it before, let expert roofing companies do the work.  Before you install a new roof, first prepare it adequately to eliminate the risk of the new roof crumbling.

Remember, a poorly prepared roof leads to holes and cracks that lead to a leaking roof. Luckily, there are plenty of ways you can prepare your roof for new shingles. Some of these ways include:

Secure the roof boards

Are you using the same roof boards without replacing them? Check each board and ensure it’s in top condition, and none will need to be replaced. Confirm all the boards are securely fastened to prevent damage to the lining or the shingles upon installation.

While at it, confirm there is no debris lying around as it can cause plenty of damage to the new roof. Also, ensure no rails or other objects are protruding out of the roof.

Install an ice and water shield

Before you install the new roof, consider putting down a layer of ice and water shield. This is a highly adhesive product so carefully place it down where you want it to go before removing the backing paper as once it has stuck, you can’t remove it.

To get the most from the paper, buy it from a reputable store. As you are installing the paper, ensure you cover all the knot holes with aluminium flashing or any similar material and hammer them down. You can use a hammer or nail gun to make the process a little quicker and more comfortable.

Install a drip edge

As part of preparing the roof for installation, highly consider installing a drip edge around the eave ends of the roof. When doing it, use galvanized nails, so they don’t rust in the rain. You should be wise how you add the drip edge.

For ideal results, install it in such a way it drapes over the rest of the drip edge. If you need to make any joints because the length of the drip edge is not long enough to fit the entire length of the cave, overlap the two pieces and bend the aluminium into place.

Add a layer of felt

Another thing you should do before installing a new roof is to add a layer of felt. When doing it, overlap it by a few inches and completely cover one side of the roof. To install a roof vent at this area, you need to cut a small part of the roof on either side of the peak the entire length of the roof.

You should then cover the remaining side of the roof with felt and cover the roof vent hole you created.

What next after preparing the roof?

After you have prepared the roof for installation, you need to follow up with the right steps for the roof to look good. The things you should do include:

Sheathing: Before you lay down the shingles, protect the roof with sheathing. Here you need to roll out a single layer of roofing felt or tar paper which will serve as a moisture barrier.

Place the sheathing layer at the bottom of the roof and add in horizontal rows. When you are adding the layer, have a slight overlap to prevent leaks. Instead of laying down the entire sheathing layer at once, lay it gradually above each finished row of shingles. You should then attach the sheathing with galvanized nails using a double layer along the top ridgeline.

Use a sheet of thin metal flashing: In areas where sections of the roof join, add a sheet of thin metal flashing. Some of these areas include vents and chimneys and around other obstructions.

When doing it, install a drip edge at the bottom edge of the roof to protect the fascia and wooden structure underneath. For ideal results, use tin snips to cut the metal into the right shapes and sizes.

Install the new shingles: Once you are done, install the roof shingles. If you have the skills, you can do the work yourself or hire roofing contractors Greenwich CT to help you out. When laying the shingles, start at the bottom and lay down a single starter course shingle, allowing at least an inch to clear the edge of the roof.

Before you do the nailing, layout an entire row and ensure all the shingles are straight.
